Where there’s a successful student, there is an active PTA!

For more than a century, Parent Teacher Association (PTA) has provided support, information and resources to families interested in the health and education of children. PTA was originally founded in 1897 in Washington DC as the National Congress of Mothers by Alice McLellan Birney and Phoebe Apperson Hearst. Without these women, PTA as we know it today would never have survived. National PTA was created to better the lives of children. Today, it continues to grow because it never loses sight of its goal: to change the lives of children across the nation for the better.

Ms. Birney and Ms. Apperson founded the organization when social activism was not popular and women did not have the right to vote. However, they felt it was up to the mothers of this country to eliminate the threats that endangered children. They called for action in 1897 and more than 2000 people responded – many were mothers, but fathers, teachers, laborers and legislators also responded. Through consistent hard work, their dreams became reality: the creation of kindergarten classes, child labor laws, a public health service, hot lunch programs, a juvenile justice system and mandatory immunization. Between 1897-1919, 37 state-level congresses were chartered to help carry out the work of this organization.

Today, PTA’s are responsible for various tasks within a school. They support various fundraising activities within school, from selling school supplies in the school store to selling custom imprinted bike bottles at school football games.
